FAQs

Here are some questions people have asked us:

1. When did The Cookschool at Stepwell begin?

Our vision for a Cookschool in the West of Scotland began over 5 years ago since we began delivering a variety of cooking classes throughout Inverclyde. The dream of a state-of-the-art venue and experience became a reality when we opened our doors in 2010. The journey to this point has been exciting with the future full of creativity, connections and of course cooking and dining experiences suitable for everyone.

2. How does the cookschool work and what sort of cooking will I do?

All our cookschools are fully hands-on ensuring everyone participates in making each of the dishes during the day or evening. We passionately believe that this is the best way for you to gain the confidence to experiment with the dishes when you get home so you can impress your friends and family!

Our full day experiences last 6 hours and run from 10am to 4pm. Our evening cookschools last 2.5 hours and are from 6.30pm to 9.00pm. Following a welcome drink, participants go on to prepare a variety of dishes covering a mixture of starters, mains, side dishes and deserts (the number of dishes prepared will depend on whether it is a full day or evening cookschool experience).

Unlike many cookery schools where you simply chop a few vegetables and the rest is all demonstration, here at The Cookschool at Stepwell you will be guided step by step through each recipe, always working in pairs. Each of our cookschools has been specially designed so that everyone enjoys and is fully involved in the cooking but also has plenty of time at the end to sit around the dining table to eat the feast that has been created. A complimentary glass of wine (or speciality soft drink) is served with the meal. Many people have commented that they feel that they have been at a dinner party with good friends rather than a formal cookery class with strangers!

3. What do I need to bring?

We provide all the ingredients, drinks, equipment, apron and recipes. All you need to bring is yourself (in comfortable shoes!).

4. Who comes to The Cookschool at Stepwell and how many people are in a cookschool?

With a maximum of 8 participants in each cookschool it is easier to ensure everyone is getting the right level of support, encouragement and guidance they need to really enjoy and develop their skills. Some bespoke cookschools can accommodate larger groups such as our Tapas and Paella courses which can take up to 12 people.

We have some foodies who attend that are expert cooks and simply want to try out a new style of cooking such as Moroccan or Thai. At the other end of the spectrum we have novice cooks who want to learn how to cook some dishes from their favourite type of food. The love of food and enthusiasm to learn are the common factors! Our minimum age limit is 16 years old.

5. How do I know which cookschool experience to take?

On our cookschool experience page we have explained in general what is involved in each class although we do not specify the actual dishes as they do change regularly in line with the seasonality of local produce. At The Cookschool at Stepwell it doesn’t matter if you don’t have any cooking experience, our small class sizes will allow you to pick up new skills and have fun along the way. Simply choose a global flavour that you love to eat, find one that suits your diary and book (why not get a friend to join you and have a great day to remember).

6. Can I book an exclusive cookschool experience for friends or family?

We love to have groups of friends coming together who want to have an exclusive cookschool experience; that is why we created our celebrate cookschools tailored specifically for that special, exclusive event. There is nothing better than good friends, great food, lots of laughter in a relaxed, stylish space that you have all to yourself (so come and make as much noise as you like!).

7. Do you cater for Corporate Groups?

The Cookschool at Stepwell has been specifically designed to create bespoke corporate events from rewarding staff to blowing the socks off your best clients. We can tailor the menu, wines and experience to your budget and can offer events for between 8 and 16 people.

8. Do you sell gift vouchers?

We do sell gift vouchers and people find they make great gifts for friends, family as well as work colleagues. Buying a voucher allows the recipient to choose when and which type of cookschool experience they would like to attend. They will receive a printed numbered voucher in the post and can then simply telephone us to book an experience of their choice. All of our vouchers are valid for 1 year from date of purchase.

9. How do I pay?

You need to pay in full at the time of booking. All payments can be made through our online shop which accepts all major credit and debit cards. We also can take card payments over the telephone. You of course are welcome to drop into the Cookschool if you’d prefer to pay for your gift vouchers or Cookschool experience in cash.

10. What happens if I can’t make the course I’m booked on?

Once you have booked onto a course we are unable to transfer you onto another course so please make sure you are available at the time of booking. If something unexpected comes up we will always welcome a substitute of your choice to attend in your place. We are unable to offer refunds.

11. Why induction hobs?

Cleaner, smarter and safer than any other method of cooking. Induction hobs heat up faster and work at almost double the speed of gas hobs. Unlike gas, there is no risk of overflowing and causing a fire. They have locks and timers, and only if a suitable pan is placed on the hob will it heat up. Because the pan heats up, rather than the hob, the kitchen will never become unbearable hot and once removed there is very little residual heat on the hob, so reducing the risk of burning hands. Induction hobs are also a ‘greener’, more energy efficient heat source.
